Which type of asphalt shingle should you choose?
Architectural shingles are the right call for nearly every Twin Cities roof — two-layer laminated, 25–30 year lifespan, and only slightly more than 3-tab. 3-tab makes sense on garages, sheds, and budget patch repairs. Designer profiles deliver cedar-shake looks on premium homes at $10–$25 per square foot installed.
Entry tier
3-tab shingles
Single-layer, flat profile, 15–20 year lifespan at $5–$10 per square foot installed. Largely replaced by architectural on homes — we install 3-tab on garages, sheds, and budget patch repairs when homeowners specifically request it.

Two-layer laminated with dimensional shadow lines, 25–30 year lifespan, stronger wind ratings — the standard on Twin Cities homes. CertainTeed Landmark, Malarkey Highlander, and Atlas Pinnacle Pristine are the lines we install most.
Premium option
Designer and luxury shingles
Heavier profile mimicking cedar shake or slate with 30+ year lifespan and $10–$25 per square foot installed. Used on Edina, Wayzata, and lake-corridor custom homes where shake aesthetics matter without cedar maintenance.
Hail protection
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles
Class 4 shingles are rated for 2-inch hail at 90 mph in UL 2218 testing. Minnesota homeowners with Class 4 typically qualify for 10–30% insurance premium discounts. Over a 25-year roof life, the discount alone often pays for the material upgrade.

Flexible and durable asphalt
SBS-modified (rubberized) asphalt adds flexibility and impact resistance to shingles. Styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer makes shingles more resilient in Minnesota's temperature swings. Malarkey Vista, Highlander, and Legacy use SBS-modified asphalt—the most hail-resistant options in the standard asphalt category, particularly valuable on tree-shaded lots.
