What are the best roofing, siding, and window brands for a Twin Cities home?

Modern Exterior Systems (Modex) publishes honest brand-vs-brand comparisons across roofing shingles, windows, siding, and gutter guards. We install CertainTeed, Malarkey, Atlas, LP SmartSide, James Hardie, Andersen, ProVia, Kolbe, and Pella. We install all GAF and Owens Corning lines upon request, and we don't carry Marvin or Milgard. Twelve detailed comparisons covering the brands most Twin Cities homeowners research.

Why we publish honest brand reviews

Most contractor websites promote only the brands they sell. Modern Exterior Systems (Modex) publishes brand-vs-brand comparisons because homeowners researching $14K–$90K exterior projects deserve a contractor's honest take—including on brands we don't install.

How we approach brand comparisons

What we install, how we pick comparisons, and why we publish honest takes on brands we carry.

We're certified for CertainTeed (ShingleMaster), Malarkey (Emerald Pro), Atlas (Pro+), and Owens Corning (Preferred Contractor) shingles. For siding, we install LP SmartSide and James Hardie. Our window brands are Andersen, ProVia, Kolbe, and Pella — we install every Andersen line, including the 100 Series Fibrex. We install GAF on request but we aren't GAF certified, and that's a choice: their certification requires making GAF your primary shingle and selling a quota of warranties every year. We won't agree to either. We don't carry Marvin, Milgard, Lindsay, or Ply Gem windows. We're also not Renewal by Andersen — that's a separate franchise, not the same as Andersen windows.

Probably a little — everyone's is. So here's the disclosure instead of a claim of objectivity: we're certified with six manufacturers and we're not exclusive to any of them, which means we have no quota to hit and nothing to lose by telling you a brand we carry is the wrong call for your house. We say so regularly. Where a brand we don't carry is genuinely better — or where a contractor with a credential we don't hold can offer you coverage we can't — we say that too. Weight our perspective accordingly.

We publish comparisons that match real homeowner research queries. Bow window vs bay window gets priority because it's a 1,600-monthly-search term. LP SmartSide vs James Hardie has been our top performer for years. We don't fabricate comparisons to fill space.

LP SmartSide vs James Hardie has driven the most traffic since publication. ProVia vs Pella Vinyl Windows ranks second consistently. Bow Window vs Bay Window targets the biggest unmet keyword opportunity and will likely lead once it ranks higher.

Yes. We publish honest comparisons of Marvin, Milgard, and Renewal by Andersen because homeowners deserve a contractor's real assessment of the full market. We also compare brands we do install against each other—Andersen vs Pella, LP SmartSide vs James Hardie. The honest take requires disclosing what we lead with and what we only install on request—not pretending we have no preference.
