Why I chose Malarkey
Both make solid shingles. I went Malarkey Emerald Pro because the product line, contractor program, and Minnesota weather fit aligned better with how I run Modex.
Reason one
Rubberized asphalt in every line
Malarkey builds NEX rubberized asphalt into all four shingle lines — Highlander, Vista, Legacy, Windsor. Cold-weather flex is the baseline, not a premium you pay for. Owens Corning keeps its SBS in Duration FLEX, which is an upgrade.
Reason two
Class 4 without leaving the mid-tier
Vista AR carries a Class 4 impact rating — the highest there is — and it's Malarkey's most popular line, not its most expensive. On the OC side, impact resistance means stepping up to Duration STORM. In a hail metro, that's the whole argument.
Reason three
We register the warranty ourselves
We're Emerald Pro certified, so the roof gets registered with Malarkey under your name by the crew that installed it. We'll install Owens Corning when a homeowner asks for it — we just don't promote it, and we won't pretend otherwise.
The verdict
So which shingle should you actually pick?
For most Minneapolis roofs, Malarkey. SBS-modified rubberized asphalt is standard across the line, so cold-weather flex and hail resistance aren't upgrades you pay extra for. Owens Corning makes a quality shingle, and I'm an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor — I just lead with Malarkey because NEX is in every shingle they make, so you get the cold-weather performance without paying up for it.
Hail exposure and freeze-thaw lead the decision
Malarkey Vista AR (or Legacy)
NEX rubberized asphalt is in every Malarkey shingle, so cold-weather flex is the baseline. What separates the lines is impact rating — Vista AR and Legacy are Class 4, the highest there is. In a metro that takes hail most summers, that's the one spec worth paying for.

Scotchgard algae-resistant granules are a real differentiator on tree-shaded Twin Cities lots — and Malarkey puts smog-reducing granules across the shingle line, not just on one product.
