MasterShield vs LeafFilter vs KleanGutter: which gutter guard works in Minneapolis?

All three are stainless micro-mesh. I install MasterShield and KleanGutter, and I've been called out to look at plenty of LeafFilter a few years after someone else put it on. The real differences are how they're built, how they're sold, and how they survive an ice-dam winter. MasterShield and KleanGutter slide under your first course of shingles and pitch with the roof, so snow and debris shed off the top. LeafFilter sits flat on a uPVC plastic frame that goes brittle at -20°F — I've watched it crack in a cold snap. Installed in the Twin Cities metro: KleanGutter runs $22–$28 a foot, MasterShield $38–$48, and LeafFilter $40–$55 after the in-home discount routine.

Comparison

Which gutter guard is best for Minneapolis homes?

I install MasterShield and KleanGutter. I don't install LeafFilter. Here's the honest comparison—all three use stainless micro-mesh, but they differ on warranty, cost, and how they're sold. MasterShield and KleanGutter are dealer networks. LeafFilter is a national franchise system with home-show sales tactics.

Seamless gutter along a residential roofline

Premium tier

MasterShield premium gutter protection

The best gutter guard I've ever installed. Copper-infused stainless mesh on a powder-coated aluminum panel that tucks under your shingles and pitches with the roof. 14+ colors and a color-matched drip edge — from the ground you'd never know it's there. Transferable manufacturer no-clog warranty plus a $1,500 deductible refund. $38–$48 a foot installed. The premium pick, and the one I've had the fewest callbacks on.

The mesh is fine — comparable to MasterShield. The frame is the problem: surgical-grade mesh over a uPVC plastic structure that clips to the gutter lip and sits flat. In Minnesota that plastic goes brittle and the flat profile traps snow and ice. $40–$55 a foot after the "today only" discount routine — right where MasterShield sits, for worse cold-weather performance.

Mid-tier value

KleanGutter solid mid-range option

Same parent company as MasterShield, same CopperCare micro-mesh, same under-shingle pitched install — think Toyota and Lexus. You trade the color-matched finish for mill-finish aluminum and save 40–50%. $22–$28 a foot installed, heat-cable compatible for ice dams, 25-year warranty. The one I put on the most Twin Cities homes.

Why I don't install LeafFilter

LeafFilter's mesh is fine — comparable to MasterShield. What I won't run is the sales model. It's sold off home-show booths with an inflated price, a call to the "manager," a "today only" discount, then a senior discount, then a "because I like you" discount — and the final number still lands at $40–$55 a foot, right where MasterShield sits with better cold-weather performance. When I give you a price, that's the price. We measure, we write it line by line, and you decide on your own timeline. No phone calls to a manager in your kitchen.

When to choose each system

Match your priorities to the right gutter guard

Choose MasterShield if you want the best and plan to stay

The premium pick. Transferable manufacturer no-clog warranty plus a $1,500 deductible refund, color-matched looks, and the fewest callbacks of anything I install. Dealer pricing — no franchise markup, no kitchen-table sales theater. If you're staying in the home long-term, this is the one I'd put on my own house.

My honest take on LeafFilter

The mesh is comparable and the 40-year transferable warranty is real. But it sits flat on a uPVC plastic frame that traps ice in a Minnesota winter, and the price lands at $40–$55 a foot after the in-home discount routine — right where MasterShield sits. I don't install it. For the same money I'd rather put on MasterShield or KleanGutter and get better cold-weather performance.

Choose KleanGutter for the best value

Same maker as MasterShield, same CopperCare micro-mesh, same under-shingle pitched install — at 40–50% less. Mill finish instead of color-matched, a 25-year product warranty, heat-cable compatible for ice dams. The system I put on the most Twin Cities homes.

The verdict

So which gutter guard actually earns its price?

I install MasterShield and KleanGutter. Pick MasterShield if you're staying long-term and want the color-matched best with the manufacturer's no-clog warranty behind it. Pick KleanGutter for the same mesh and pitched install at 40–50% less — mill finish is its only look. LeafFilter's mesh is fine — but it costs MasterShield money for a flat plastic frame that struggles in a Minnesota winter.

Staying long-term, want the best

MasterShield

Transferable manufacturer no-clog warranty plus a $1,500 deductible refund, color-matched so you'd never know it's there, and the fewest callbacks of anything I install. If I were putting one system on my own house, this is it.

Best value for most homes

KleanGutter

Same maker as MasterShield, same CopperCare micro-mesh, same under-shingle pitched install — at 40–50% less. Mill finish instead of color-matched, 25-year warranty, heat-cable compatible for ice dams. The one I put on the most Twin Cities homes.

Compare the per-foot price

After the discount routine, LeafFilter lands at $40–$55 a foot — right where MasterShield sits. The mesh is comparable; the flat uPVC frame is what struggles in a Minnesota winter. For the same money, I'd rather install the pitched aluminum system.
