GAF Timberline Shingles: A Contractor's Honest Take on Why I Recommend Other Brands
I'll lead with the honest disclosure: my active recommendations are CertainTeed Landmark, Malarkey Vista, and Atlas Pinnacle Pristine. Those are the three lines I hold top-tier manufacturer certifications for — CertainTeed ShingleMaster, Malarkey Emerald, and Atlas Pro+ Silver Select. We're not GAF Master Elite, and GAF isn't on my short list of recommendations.
That said — if you've done your research and you specifically want GAF Timberline on your house, I'll install it. We install the brands homeowners ask for. What I won't do is pretend I'd recommend it first. So this post is the honest explanation of why GAF isn't where I steer most of my customers, and what I'd put on a Twin Cities roof instead.
This isn't a GAF-bashing piece. Timberline is the #1-selling architectural shingle in North America, and there's a real reason for that. It's a competent product, the company has a massive service network, and millions of homeowners are perfectly happy with their GAF roofs. I'm not saying you'd be making a mistake.
I'm saying I made a different choice for my company, and here's why.
The Quick Answer
I recommend CertainTeed Landmark, Malarkey Vista, and Atlas Pinnacle Pristine over GAF Timberline because:
- CertainTeed's SureStart Plus warranty (with a ShingleMaster install) is structured better in the dimensions that matter most to homeowners — non-prorated workmanship duration and material transfer-ability.
- Malarkey Vista is a heavier, polymer-modified shingle with better cold-weather flexibility than GAF Timberline HDZ — important in Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles.
- GAF Master Elite has been issued to a high enough volume of contractors that the certification itself doesn't filter as strongly for install quality as CertainTeed ShingleMaster or Malarkey Emerald.
None of those make GAF wrong. They're the reasons I went with CertainTeed, Malarkey, and Atlas instead. Want a deeper dive on the head-to-head? I wrote a full breakdown here: CertainTeed vs GAF Shingles: An Honest Comparison From a Contractor Who's Installed Both.
What GAF Timberline Is
GAF is owned by Standard Industries and is the largest residential roofing manufacturer in North America. The relevant lineup:
- GAF Timberline HDZ — The flagship. 230 lbs per square, 130 mph wind warranty with LayerLock and a Master Elite install, 10-year algae resistance. Roughly $5.50 to $7.50 per square foot installed in the Twin Cities.
- GAF Timberline UHDZ — Heavier (300 lbs/sq), premium aesthetic. About $1.00–$1.50 per square foot more installed.
- GAF Timberline HDZ RS — Class 4 impact-rated. About $1.00 more per square foot.
- GAF Grand Sequoia — Designer line. Heavier, distinctive look. Roughly $8.00 to $10.00 per square foot installed.
- GAF Camelot II — Slate-look luxury. Roughly $9.00 to $11.00 per square foot installed.
The standout feature is LayerLock technology — a reinforced fastening zone designed to prevent shingle blow-off. It's the GAF equivalent of OC's SureNail or CertainTeed's standard nailing zone.
Where GAF Is Genuinely Good
I'm trying to be honest here, not promotional. GAF Timberline does several things well:
Service network. GAF has the largest service network of any asphalt manufacturer. Warranty claims process quickly. If your installer disappears in 10 years, GAF will still be there.
Brand recognition. Real estate appraisers and insurance adjusters universally know GAF. There's no "is this a real brand?" friction.
Color palette. GAF's color line is broad and current. Most Twin Cities siding palettes have a match.
Price. Timberline HDZ is competitive with CertainTeed Landmark and OC Duration. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive.
Master Elite warranty. When a GAF Master Elite contractor installs Timberline and registers the Golden Pledge warranty, the coverage is comprehensive — including a 25-year non-prorated workmanship guarantee from GAF.
Why I Didn't Become GAF-Certified
Three reasons, in order of how much weight I gave them:
1. CertainTeed's SureStart Plus is structured better for my customers.
CertainTeed's ShingleMaster certification requires a higher technical install audit than GAF Master Elite. When I'm registered as a ShingleMaster and install Landmark with the SureStart Plus warranty, the coverage extends to:
- 50-year non-prorated materials warranty
- 25-year non-prorated workmanship warranty (from CertainTeed, not just from the contractor)
- Transferable to the next homeowner
GAF's Golden Pledge has similar duration but the material transfer terms are slightly less generous, and the certification standards for Master Elite are lower than ShingleMaster from what I've seen. Other contractors will disagree on that — and they may be right in their markets. In my experience, the SureStart Plus warranty has fewer disputes with homeowners than the Golden Pledge. More on the ShingleMaster program here: What Does a CertainTeed ShingleMaster Certification Actually Mean? — and the product page itself is at /certainteed-shingles.
2. Malarkey's polymer-modified asphalt is better in Minnesota cold.
Malarkey's shingles use SBS-modified (rubberized) asphalt. In Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles and -20°F winters, that matters — the shingle stays flexible where standard asphalt becomes brittle. GAF Timberline HDZ uses standard asphalt with some modifications, but not the same polymer-modified formula. After 15 years on a Minnesota roof, the Malarkey shingle bends. The standard asphalt is more likely to crack.
I've torn off 15-year-old Malarkey roofs in the Twin Cities and the shingles are still pliable. I've torn off 15-year-old standard asphalt roofs in similar conditions and the shingles snap when you bend them. They sound like crackers. That's the polymer modification doing its job — and it's why Malarkey is on my recommended list. Product detail at /malarkey-shingles.
3. Master Elite certification has lower scarcity than the marketing suggests.
GAF Master Elite is held by roughly 2–3% of GAF-installing contractors in any market. That sounds exclusive — and it's the marketing line GAF uses. But in practice, in the Twin Cities, "2–3% of GAF contractors" is still a few dozen contractors. The certification doesn't filter strongly for the top tier of install quality in this market.
CertainTeed ShingleMaster certification has a smaller absolute pool of certified contractors in the Twin Cities, and the audit process is more rigorous. The certification itself is a stronger signal. Atlas Pro+ Silver Select is similar — a tighter program, more hands-on technical review. Atlas details at /atlas-shingles.
What I Tell Homeowners Who Want GAF
If you've done your homework and you want GAF Timberline on your house, I'll install it. We're not GAF Master Elite, so you won't get the Golden Pledge with us — but the product is the same product, and a clean install on Timberline HDZ is a clean install. The choice belongs to the homeowner.
What I'll do alongside the GAF quote is put a CertainTeed Landmark or Malarkey Vista number next to it, so you can compare apples-to-apples. About 60% of the time, the homeowner picks CertainTeed or Malarkey after seeing the warranty side-by-side. The other 40% stick with GAF. Both decisions are reasonable. The product is fine. The install is what matters.
If you specifically want a Master Elite contractor on a GAF Timberline job — meaning you want the Golden Pledge warranty — I'll point you toward a couple of Twin Cities Master Elite contractors I respect. You should never be in a corner where someone is selling you a product they don't have the cert for.
The Real Complaints I Hear About GAF Timberline
These are complaints I hear from homeowners who did install GAF:
Class action lawsuits. GAF has been involved in multiple class action lawsuits over premature shingle failure, particularly on certain pre-2014 product lines. Newer Timberline HDZ doesn't appear to have the same issues, but the lawsuits affect homeowner trust. Worth knowing if you're researching the brand.
Granule loss. Some 2016–2019 Timberline batches showed accelerated granule loss in extreme south-facing exposures. GAF replaced affected roofs under warranty but the claim process was slow.
Wind warranty exclusions. The 130 mph wind warranty requires LayerLock installation and a 6-nail high-wind pattern. Some contractors take shortcuts. If you got the GAF roof and you're not sure whether the 6-nail pattern was used, that's a quote-ticking-time-bomb you may not know you have.
What I Install Instead, and Why
For most Twin Cities standard architectural projects: CertainTeed Landmark
- 50-year SureStart Plus material warranty (with ShingleMaster install)
- 25-year non-prorated workmanship warranty (manufacturer-backed)
- Broad color palette
- Strong national service network
For Class 4 impact-rated projects: Malarkey Vista
- Polymer-modified (SBS) asphalt — better cold flexibility
- Class 4 impact rating standard
- 30-year non-prorated warranty with Emerald install
- Made in the U.S. (Portland, OR and Cleveland, OH)
For homeowners who want a heavier shingle without going to designer pricing: Atlas Pinnacle Pristine
- Scotchgard granules — stronger algae resistance over time
- HP42 oversized shingle (slightly faster install, less seam exposure)
- Pro+ Silver Select 20-year non-prorated coverage

The Bottom Line
GAF Timberline isn't a bad shingle. It's the most-installed architectural shingle in North America for legitimate reasons. If a homeowner wants it on their house, I'll put it on. And if you want the Golden Pledge warranty specifically, I'll point you toward a Master Elite contractor I respect.
I went a different direction with my company's certifications because CertainTeed, Malarkey, and Atlas deliver better warranties, better cold-weather performance, and more rigorous install standards for my customers in Minnesota. Other Twin Cities contractors have made the opposite choice with good reasons. That's a fair disagreement.
What matters most: the contractor's install quality matters more than the shingle brand. A great install on a GAF Timberline will outperform a bad install on a CertainTeed Presidential every time. If you're not sure how to vet that, I put together a credential checklist for Minnesota homeowners here: How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Minnesota: A Credential Checklist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are GAF Timberline shingles good?
Yes — they're a competent mid-tier architectural shingle. The most-installed asphalt shingle in North America. Whether they're the right pick depends on your contractor's certifications and your priorities.
GAF vs CertainTeed — which is better?
Both are well-made. I think CertainTeed's SureStart Plus warranty (with a ShingleMaster contractor) is structured better than GAF's Golden Pledge. CertainTeed has a broader color palette. GAF has a slightly larger service network. Reasonable people disagree on the comparison.
GAF vs Malarkey — which is better for Minnesota?
For Minnesota cold, I think Malarkey's polymer-modified asphalt is better than GAF's standard formula. Malarkey Vista is Class 4 impact-rated as standard; GAF Timberline HDZ RS is Class 4 only at the upgraded tier.
Does Modern Exterior Systems install GAF?
Yes — on homeowner request. We're not GAF Master Elite, so you won't get the Golden Pledge warranty through us. Our active recommendations are CertainTeed Landmark, Malarkey Vista, and Atlas Pinnacle Pristine — the three lines we hold top-tier manufacturer certifications for. If GAF is what you specifically want, we'll install it and we'll also quote you the alternatives so you can compare directly.
Is GAF involved in lawsuits?
GAF has been involved in multiple class action lawsuits over premature shingle failure on certain product lines. Some have been settled; others are ongoing. Worth knowing if you're researching the brand.
What's the difference between GAF Master Elite and CertainTeed ShingleMaster?
Both are manufacturer-certified contractor programs. Master Elite is held by approximately 2–3% of GAF-installing contractors. ShingleMaster has a smaller absolute pool of certified contractors with more rigorous install audits in my experience. Both extend stronger manufacturer warranties.
