How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take in Minnesota?

Most homeowners are surprised how fast it goes. They've braced for a week of chaos, and then a crew shows up, and the whole roof is done before dinner the next day. I've been running Twin Cities roofing crews for 20 years, and the honest answer to "how long will this take?" is: less time than you think, but with a few things that can stretch it.

I'm Joe Dvorak. Here's what actually drives the timeline.

The Short Answer

Most asphalt shingle roof replacements on a typical Twin Cities home take one to three days of actual work — and for a lot of homes, it's a single long day. Bigger, steeper, or more complicated roofs run longer, and premium materials like cedar, synthetic shake, or metal can stretch it to several days or more. Weather and any hidden deck damage are the two things most likely to add time.

A Typical Asphalt Replacement, Hour by Hour

On a standard single-family home, here's how a one-to-two-day job actually flows:

  1. Setup and protection (morning, day 1). We protect your landscaping, set up tarps and the dump trailer, and stage materials. This matters more than people think — a clean setup is what keeps your yard and gutters from becoming a mess.
  2. Tear-off. The old shingles come off down to the deck. On most homes this is a few hours.
  3. Deck inspection and repair. With the old roof off, we can finally see the wood deck. Sound deck, we move on. Rotten or soft spots, we replace them — this is the step that can add time (more on that below).
  4. Underlayment and ice-and-water shield. Synthetic underlayment over the field, ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys — critical in Minnesota for ice dams.
  5. Shingles, flashing, and ventilation. The new roof goes on, with new flashing at every penetration and proper ridge ventilation.
  6. Cleanup. Magnetic sweep for nails, gutters cleared, debris hauled. You should not be finding roofing nails in your driveway a month later.

For most homes, steps 2 through 6 fit inside one to two working days.

Why Minnesota Adds a Wrinkle

The work itself isn't slower here — but the scheduling is. We can't shingle in a downpour or dangerous cold, and our weather windows are tighter. Asphalt shingles seal best in warmer temperatures, so deep-winter installs require extra care and the right products. That's why a job might get scheduled a week or two out for a good weather window, even though the actual install is quick. The "how long does it take" clock that matters to most people is the install — but the calendar from signing to finished depends on the season and the queue. Want to time it right? What Slows a Job Down

  • Size and pitch. A big roof, or a steep one my crew has to move carefully on, takes longer than a simple ranch.
  • Complexity. Lots of valleys, hips, dormers, chimneys, and skylights mean more cutting, more flashing, more detail work.
  • Hidden deck damage. We don't know what the deck looks like until the old roof is off. Widespread rot means replacing sheathing before we can re-roof — the most common reason a one-day job becomes a two-day job, and the most common reason the final cost shifts from the estimate.
  • Weather. A storm rolling through can pause a job and push it to the next clear day.
  • Material. Asphalt is fast. Cedar, synthetic shake, and metal are slower, more detailed installs.

Timeline by Material

Material Typical install time
Asphalt shingles 1–2 days (often 1)
Synthetic shake / slate 3–6+ days
Cedar shake 4–7+ days
Standing seam metal several days to a week+

These assume a typical single-family home and decent weather. Bigger or more complex roofs run longer in every category.

Joe's Note

Fast isn't the goal — right is. A crew can technically tear off and re-shingle an average roof in a day, but the parts that make a roof last are the parts that don't show: the ice-and-water shield run high enough at the eaves, the flashing done properly instead of caulked over, the deck rot actually fixed instead of roofed over. If a quote is dramatically faster and cheaper than everyone else, ask which of those steps they're skipping. Speed is easy. Doing it right at speed is the whole job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a roof be replaced in one day?

Yes — many average-sized asphalt roofs in the Twin Cities are torn off and fully reinstalled in a single long day with a full crew. Larger, steeper, or more complex roofs, premium materials, or hidden deck repairs push it to two days or more.

Do I need to leave my house during a roof replacement?

No. It's loud, and there will be crew and debris around the exterior, but you can stay home. Most people work from home or run errands during the noisiest stretch. You'll want to move vehicles out of the driveway and away from the work zone.

What happens if it rains during my roof replacement?

A good crew never tears off more than they can dry-in the same day, so your home stays protected. If weather rolls in, work pauses and the exposed areas are covered, then we resume on the next clear day. Minnesota's pop-up storms are exactly why crews stage the work in manageable sections.

How long does it take to replace a roof after I sign?

The install is quick, but the calendar from signing to finished depends on the season, the weather window, and the schedule — often a week or two out in busy seasons. Storm season and fall are the busiest. Booking earlier in the season usually means a shorter wait.

Does a bigger or steeper roof take much longer?

Yes. Square footage, pitch, and complexity (valleys, dormers, chimneys, skylights) all add time. A simple one-story ranch might be a day; a large, steep, cut-up two-story can be several. Your contractor should give you a realistic day-count after measuring.

Will replacing my roof make a mess in my yard?

It shouldn't, if it's done right. A good crew tarps and protects landscaping, contains debris in a dump trailer, and finishes with a magnetic nail sweep of the yard and driveway. Cleanup is part of the job — you shouldn't be finding nails weeks later.
